Electro galvanized steel is a type of steel that is coated with zinc for protection through the electroplating process. The zinc coating is applied to the cold-rolled steel at a low temperature. So EG steel is also known as cold galvanized steel. Through electrolytic galvanizing, it finally forms a uniform and dense zinc layer on the steel surface but still keeps the mechanical properties of the material. Electro-galvanized steel is often sold in coil or sheet form. EG coil is a kind of material, which can be sheared, slit, and profiled for other uses. The coil weight usually ranges from 3 to 8 tons. The steel code of the electro-galvanized steel is composed of the grade of the base metal, electro-galvanizing (E), and the zinc coating type and weight. The electro-galvanized products with substrates of SPCC, SPCD, SPCE, SPCF, and SPCG are named SECC, SECD, SECE, SECF, and SECG respectively.
Electro galvanizing is a process that involves electroplating a layer of zinc onto the surface of steel. This is done by passing an electric current through a solution of zinc and saline, with a zinc anode and a steel conductor. Electro galvanizing aims to protect steel from corrosion, prolong its service life, and enhance its decorative appearance. Zinc has a high resistance to oxidation in dry air and in a humid environment, which provides protection against corrosion. When the protective layer is damaged, a micro battery is formed between the zinc and steel, which ensures that the steel substrate remains protected. The full cold galvanizing process is:
Chemical degreasing→hot water washing→water washing→electrolytic degreasing→water washing→ acid pickling → rust cleaning →water washing→electro-galvanizing process→water washing→ passivation→hot water washing→drying→quality inspection→packaging for sale

Hot-dip galvanizing is a process of metal corrosion protection that involves immersing the steel in a hot liquid zinc bath after pretreatment. The steel surface adheres to the zinc, improving the corrosion resistance and performance of the steel material. The production process of hot-dip galvanizing is as follows:
Base metal → degreasing → water washing → pickling → water washing → rinsing → flux solution → drying → hot-dip galvanizing → cooling → inspection → packaging
On the other hand, electro galvanizing involves forming a smooth and dense metal coating through electrolysis on the steel surface. Zinc ions in the electroplating solution are sent to the steel plate through an electric current. The thicker the coating, the more electric energy is consumed. The basic process of electro-galvanizing includes several steps:
Base metal → degreasing → etching → polishing → galvanizing → hydrogen removal → passivation/dyeing
Hot dip Galvanizing Process
Hot-dip galvanized steel typically has a thicker coating than electro galvanized steel. The zinc coating thickness of HDG steel can reach 275 g/m2. While the EG steel is much thinner, ranging between 10-30 g/m2.
While both hot dip and cold galvanized steel provide some degree of corrosion resistance. But hot-dipped galvanized steel is generally more effective in preventing corrosion in harsh environments. This is because the thicker zinc coating provides a greater barrier against the corrosive elements.
The surface of hot-dip galvanized steel is darker, uneven, and slightly rough, and will produce spangles, water lines, dripping tumors, etc. It is silvery-grey in color. However, electro-galvanized steel has a uniform and dense zinc layer, with a smooth and bright surface. It is silvery-white and free of zinc flowers. But over time, the zinc layer is easy to fall off.

Hot-dip galvanized steel products have the characteristics of excellent corrosion resistance, low production cost, and environmental protection. Therefore, it is more suitable for large parts and widely used in many industries like construction, agriculture, energy, oil & gas, transportation, etc.
Electro-galvanized steel products have good processability, weldability, and paintability, more suitable for making small parts. So it finds common usage in automotive exterior panels, high-end home appliances, office supplies, kitchenware, and other applications.
Due to the complex manufacturing process of hot-dip galvanizing and the high production cost, the corrosion resistance of hot-dip galvanized steel is also stronger than that of electro-galvanized steel. Therefore, the price of hot-dip galvanizing is more expensive than that of electro-galvanized steel.
Q: Will electro zinc coated steel rust?
A: Yes, it will rust over time. As we know, the corrosion resistance of galvanized steel sheets largely depends on the thickness of the protective zinc coating. Electro-galvanized steel usually has a thin zinc layer. Therefore, it does not live as long as hot dipped galvanized steel. Under normal conditions, it only has a few years of life.
Q: Is electro galvanized steel magnetic?
A: Yes, EG steel is magnetic. EG steel is a ferrous metal, which contains iron. Iron and steel are both magnetic materials, which means that electro galvanized steel will also be magnetic. The electroplating process applying the zinc coating to the steel does not affect the magnetic properties of the underlying steel.
Q: Can you paint electro galvanized steel?
A: Yes. EGI steel and HDG steel can be painted. But it requires proper preparation and uses suitable paints properly.
To ensure good adhesion of the paint to the electro galvanized surface, it is important to first clean the surface by removing any oils, greases, or other contaminants.
